Lee, even if not called a real hurricane, is acting like one. It's affecting places like New England and parts of Canada near the sea. With strong winds close to 80 mph, almost like a Category 1 hurricane, it changed into a different type of storm by Saturday morning. Now, it's moving towards Nova Scotia.
How Lee Changed Over Time
Lee started near Africa on September 1 as a small storm. By September 5, it got stronger and got its name, "Lee". It became even bigger and turned into a Category 5 storm by September 8. But after some time, it became weaker. Lee then changed its energy source. Instead of getting energy from the warm ocean, it now gets it from air currents. This made Lee lose its circular shape and it now looks more stretched out.
By Saturday morning, Lee was about 160 miles away from a place called Eastport in Maine and around 185 miles from Halifax in Nova Scotia. It's moving fast and might reach Nova Scotia by the afternoon.
What Lee is Doing Now
People in places like Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and part of Maine should expect rain. Near the sea, they might get 2 inches of rain. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick might get up to 3 inches.
Winds are also a big deal. Halifax in Nova Scotia has seen very fast winds, up to 66 mph. And when Lee reaches Nova Scotia, the winds might get even faster, maybe up to 75 mph.
Even with these winds, big waves from the sea haven't been a huge problem. But the sea near Nova Scotia might rise 3 to 4 feet because of the winds.
What to Expect Next
For places in the U.S., like New England, the weather will slowly get better. But in parts of Maine, it might take longer. In Canada, places like Nova Scotia and New Brunswick will feel Lee's effects until Sunday. It looks like Lee will reach land around lunchtime or a bit later.
A cool thing about storms like Lee is they can make the sky look amazing during sunset. On Friday, people in New England saw a really beautiful sunset, which often happens when big storms are nearby.
As Lee keeps moving, people should be careful and get ready for what might come.
